CELERY JUICE 101: BENEFITS, RULES AND RECIPE (NO JUCIER REQUIRED)

Okay so I have to admit, when I first heard about this celery juice fad I laughed and was like sure, celery, cool… Well. Here I am, morning four of making my own celery juice. I’m sure the celery gods are muttering something along the lines of “who’s laughing now” as I chop, blend and strain my juice on the regular.

If you’ve been following along, you know I like to keep things simple and to the point. There is a lot of information out there on this topic and my goal with this blog is break down the benefits, hit you with the must know rules and tips, and give you a very simple and easy recipe to follow whether you have a juicer or not.

Benefits of Celery Juice:

Without trying to get into too much scientific detail, I still feel its important to know the why behind these benefits. One of the most beneficial properties of celery juice is the fact that it contains mineral salts. These seem to be the leading fighter and cause for many of the items listed below.

Reduces inflammation:

There are two special compounds in celery, polyacetylene and luteolin, which make celery an anti-inflammatory powerhouse. It also starves the pathogens, including unproductive bacteria and viruses such as Epstein-Barr (EBV), that can create inflammation in the body.

Optimizes digestion by increasing the production of hydrochloric acid and balances body pH:

Celery juice is packed with mineral salts. Mineral salts are critical for our bodies to function optimally. They keep your kidneys and adrenals functioning and raise your gut’s hydrochloric acid. They also balance your pH as well as cleanse and repair your stomach, theyrest of your digestive tract, and, most importantly, your liver. Low levels of hydrochloric acid can result in bloating, gas, heart burn, fatigue to name a few. The fact that celery juice helps to increase these HCL levels, helps relieve these symptoms. Nervous System Support:

Celery is a powerhouse for supporting the nervous system. It has a calming effect on the nervous system because of its detoxify properties. It also provides support through its ability to act as a blood purifier.1 The electrolytes in celery hydrate on a deep cellular level, lessening your chances of suffering from migraines, anxiety, panic attacks, and more. Celery also stabilizes and supports the adrenal glands, offers stress assistance, and repairs damaged cells inside the liver. 2

Balancing the thyroid and hormones:

The mineral salts in celery help to fight and cleanse the body of the Epstein-Barr virus, particularly in the thyroid. Celery can also help to boost production of important thyroid hormones in those with hypothyroidism.1

Clearing the skin & acne:

Since celery’s mineral salts are antibacterial, they kill bacteria such as strep, and that encourages a healthy environment for “good” bacteria. Low-grade strep infections are often the actual cause of urinary tract infections (UTIs), chronic sinus infections, acne, IBS, and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). 2

Rules for Consuming Celery Juice:

1.     Drink Celery Juice on its own for best results as other ingredients diminish the health properties.

2.     Drink Celery Juice first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.

3.     Wait 20-30 minutes before consuming other food or beverages

4.     Drink celery juice within 24h of juicing/blending

5.     Buy organic celery if possible and thoroughly wash it before juicing/blending.

6.     Always strain out the fibre/pulp after blending.

7.     Recommended amount is 16 oz or roughly 2 cups of juice per day.

8.     Pre chop your celery and place it in a bowl of water in the fridge to save you time and mess in the morning.

9.     Pre-cut your cheese cloth to also save you time in the morning.

10.  Don’t forget to squeeze the pulp out after as there is still a lot of juice in it. Other option to try is a nut milk bag.

Why I’m Drinking Celery Juice:

I’m not just jumping on this health fad for the fun of it. As I mentioned at the start, I legitimately laughed and was so confused as to why anyone would do this in the morning. I have an ongoing issue with yeast, digestion, UTI’s and have been experiencing extreme fatigue for the last few months. I have seen my doctor many times for each ailment individually and am finally starting to learn and understand how all of these items are actually connected. My hope is that this simple act of drinking celery juice every morning will help end these ongoing issues and allow me to feel energized, rejuvenated, and like a real f’ing human again. I will keep you posted on my results over the next few weeks!

How to Make Celery Juice Without A Juicer:

I was pleasantly surprised at how easy and effortless the process was to make celery juice. It takes about 5 min and has minimal clean up. I like to pre chop my celery and let it sit in a bowl of water in the fridge. This eliminates having to chop and clean up every morning.

Step 4:

Move the pulp around with a spoon or the end of a fork to make sure you are getting all the juice. Gently squeeze the cheese cloth to really get all the juice out. You have the option to keep the pulp/fibre and add it to your smoothie later on in the day, or simply toss it away.
